Remote Interpreting: A Success

The June 2024 mission to Peru marked a significant milestone for our team as we embarked on the journey of remote interpreting for the first time. This innovative approach was graciously lead by our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Ginny, along with a dedicated group of 12 interpreters. The team comprised of GHM veteran volunteers and seasoned interpreters from the LAUGHH organization, who came together to be the crucial voice for both medical providers and patients.

The conversations facilitated through remote interpreting varied from lighthearted and happy to deeply educational and serious. This blend of communication styles highlighted the effectiveness of the interpreters in bridging the gap between healthcare providers and the local community. The interpreters played an essential role in ensuring that every patient’s needs were understood and met, enhancing the overall quality of care.

The concept of remote interpreting originated from an unexpected challenge during our April mission in Guatemala. When one of our interpreters fell ill and couldn't join the team on the truck ride to a remote village, we had to think quickly. With Microsoft Teams already established for our regular telehealth program, we saw an opportunity to adapt and innovate. This experience underscored the necessity and potential of remote interpreting, paving the way for its successful implementation in Peru.

The success of this initiative in Peru not only demonstrated the feasibility of remote interpreting but also showcased the resilience and adaptability of our team. By leveraging technology, we were able to maintain the high standard of communication and care that our missions are known for, ensuring that no patient was left unheard.
