Shipping Container Arrives in Peru
In a remarkable show of generosity and community spirit, a diverse group of former volunteers, local community members, veteran GHM volunteers, and friends came together to gather, pack, and send critical medical and surgical supplies to Peru in preparation for Global Health Ministry's (GHM) October mission. The container, filled with essential items, was packed in Edison, NJ, thanks to the ongoing partnership with Cardinal Health and the dedicated efforts of new and veteran GHM team members.
The story began in March when GHM employees received an unexpected call from a former volunteer in Minnesota. Her organization had ceased its missions to Peru, but she had accumulated pallets of walkers, wheelchairs, canes, and other vital medical supplies. Determined to continue supporting the people of Peru, she reached out to GHM for help in transporting these crucial items. Through coordinated efforts with Cardinal Health and Trinity Health, GHM was able to palletize and ship all the supplies to Edison, NJ, where they were included in the container headed for Peru.
In addition to the wheelchairs, walkers, and surgical supplies, a dedicated group of veteran volunteers rallied their communities to collect over 30 strollers, both new and used. These strollers are a lifeline for families with children who are unable to walk, often carried by their mothers who struggle to bear the weight of children almost as big as they are. The importance of these strollers cannot be overstated, as they provide much-needed relief and support, significantly improving the quality of life for these families.
In June alone, four strollers were distributed to families in need, with three more families eagerly awaiting the container's arrival to receive theirs. The strollers will provide essential mobility and independence for these children, easing the burden on their families and enhancing their daily lives.
This collective effort to gather and send these supplies underscores the power of community action and the profound impact it can have on lives across the globe. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and the unwavering commitment of GHM's volunteers and supporters to make a difference in the world.
Next year's container packing will be held on Saturday July 19th, 2025. Email marie.robson@trinity-health.org if you are willing and able to help with either acquiring supplies or packing items.
