History

In August of 1989, the Sisters of Mercy ministering in Chulucanas in Northern Peru recognized that while they attended to the pastoral and educational needs of the people, those who were poor lacked access to healthcare. The Sisters made a request to their friends in the United States who were health care professionals to consider volunteering to minister to the people of Chulucanas…thus beginning what was initially called “Salud y Misericordia." The small team of six doctors and nurses that volunteered in 1989 has now grown to over 100 medical volunteers to Peru each year. Additional volunteers provide medical relief and education in Haiti, Guatemala, and Jamaica. These additional sites were developed in response to requests from the in-country partners in each location.
