In August of 1989, the Sisters of Mercy ministering in Chulucanas in Northern Peru recognized that while they attended to the pastoral and educational needs of the people, there was no one attending to the ministry of healing. So they requested their friends in the United States to consider sending health care professionals as volunteers to minister to the people of Chulucanas…thus beginning what was initially called “Salud y Misericordia".
A small team of six doctors and nurses volunteered in 1989 and has now grown to over 100 medical volunteers to Peru each year, and additional volunteers providing medical care in Haiti, Guatemala, and Jamaica.
On June 14, 2019, thirty-nine Global Health Volunteers team members journeyed once again to Chulucanas and attended to 1,077 primary care visits and 38 surgeries during the 14-day mission.
Global Health is privileged to return to Peru in October to continue the 30-year tradition of ministering to the health needs of the peoples of Chulucanas.
