Chulucanas, Peru - June

Global Health Volunteers provide primary care, including optometry, physical and occupational therapy and health education twice each year – in June and again in October.  The June team, usually a large team of 25 to 30 or more requires 2 or 3 pediatric and 4 to 6 adult medical providers.  This team provides health examinations, care and education for as many as 2,000 patients during the two week mission.  Patients identified as requiring surgery by the June team are referred to the GHV Surgery Team that will come in October. The October primary care team is usually a smaller team with 2 or 3 providers and the support staff required to provide care in outlying communities.  Non-communicable conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, musculoskeletal conditions, lung disease, and heart disease are treated and medications are left with on-site health professionals to ensure those we treat have enough medication and supplies until our return.
